I know they marked the barrels “AS”starting in 1988 when the safety was added but I am not sure exactly when the roll mark on the barrel went back to “A”.
SN 18044588 is a Marlin Glenfield 30A mounted with a Marlin 4 X 32 scope in 30-30. This model was built as a promotional Glenfield with birch stock circa 1964 to 1983. This example shows the 20" barrel with a bright excellent micro grooved barrel. The blue remains at 95% + with areas of light discolouration.The 1976 version seems to be more accurate with 150 gr bullets, whereas the 1983 version likes the 170 gr bullets. The main difference is that the Glenfield has a walnut stained hardwood stock (usually birch) whereas the Marlin as a walnut stock. You are correct, the Marlin Model 30A was made from 1973 to 1983. Since your gun has a 1972 serial number, it apparently was a leftover receiver that Marlin decided to use in 1973 with the introduction of the Model 30A. Marlin is known for using leftover parts over the years so as not to let anything go to waste. Simple answer.
