Ya SKL weapons do feel rarer even with the threaded cane as a very viable starting weapon. I just started a new skill character and I'm running with the saw spear until I can fight my way to the Church Pick. I prefer the spear/cleaver move set to the cane. I think the "best" for your use case would whichever one keeps you from getting hit.
