I wasted 150+ battleships trying to take out the portal head-on against waves of respawning fleets before I decided to use my head. I eventually figured out the defense platforms around ...I noticed that you can either take a choice to seal the dimensional portal or not; sealing it adds another section to the astral rift plot, which then concludes. Not sealing it ends the rift plot immediately and generates a wormhole. I didn’t check what’s on the other side of the wormhole, but it’s presumably some kind of threat.
