A Ranger could bring an animal companion in to even the odds, Barbarians are just hard to keep down, etc. You could even do a Rogue despite the lack of flanking buddies; but you'll need a reliable way of making enemies flat-footed. Actually, trying to diagnose what went wrong with Ranger: D&D 3e still really loved limited uses of abilities, like how even cantrips were single-use.
