They have specific slots just like all other empowered gems. They can't mix and match. Which I'm not a fan of because I had to sacrifice a good Fire Empowered to put my class gem in, which meant that I had to find another Empowered Gem that had the added effect (Sun Disc) rather than sacrifice the Air Empowered Gem that had good stats but was the "projectile speed" crap.
