I've started playing and played a good bit of the base game but I can't seem to survive through even the first night most of the time. Same goes with your initial base. A horde rocks up, run away, then return and either pick them off as they start dispersing, or wait longer and they will have despawned. Also, remember to make sure your XP gain is not too high for DF. Keep it on 100% or lower if you are playing on Warrior difficulty or higher.
