Sometimes it's multiple big oceans you can connect with good Canal cities and build a super trade empire. Sometimes it's 1 big ass ocean and naval strength is viable.

It also makes it easy to use policies that affect “cities not on your home continent.” (They also added “Seven Seas” in the same patch.) Not sure if you need Gathering Storm for those two though ...
