It's probably moving too far towards the low gear and when it high it's not locked in all of the way. I am posting the adjustment diagram below. If adjusting it doesn't help you out then you know that chances are there are worn parts in the engine. (Not very common.)Turn off the fuel at the tank and remove the screw from the center of the petcock handle. Remove all of the phillips screws and the two 6mm (10mm head) bolts at the back of the tank holding the tank cover on.
